Village of Churchville RefuseNOTE: VILLAGE INITIATES PROGRAM REQUIRING USE OF BIODEGRADABLE BAGS FOR GARDEN WASTE RECYCLING Effective May 1, 2003, it will be required that residents use Biodegradable Bags for Garden Waste Recycling. The Village DPW advocates the use by residents of biodegradable bags for the bi-monthly pickup of garden/yard waste. Currently residents place their garden waste at the curb-side in open containers. THE USE OF PLASTIC BAGS IS PROHIBITED. The village composts all collected garden/yard waste. There are two primary reasons for switching to biodegradable bags: safety and time savings. A preliminary investigation into the cost indicates that it is comparable to plastic bags. However, the village office will have a limited supply of these bags available at no cost. They are available at the village office. REFUSE REFUSE PICKUP: Due to the Host Agreement between the Town of Riga and the County of Monroe, refuse payments will no longer be collected by the Village of Churchville starting April 1, 2005. Any overpayments or exiting credits will be placed on other village utilities. The village will continue to supply blue boxes for recyclables to residents when they are requested. Toters (96 gallon capacity) are free and can be obtained by calling the village office, but will be delivered to residents by Waste Managment. The village will continue to pick up "white goods" when they are called in and the leaf/brush pickup will continue as in the past. 3-yard dumpsters will be available to VILLAGE residents on a first come, first served basis at a cost of $30.00. Dumpsters will be delivered on Thursday or Friday and picked up on the following Monday or Tuesday. Complete rules and regulations for pickup may be obtained at the Village Office. GARBAGE PICKUP: Waste Management will continue to pick up garbage and recyclable items on Wednesday of each week. If a holiday falls on Wednesday, pickup will be the next day. Items MAY NOT BE PLACED AT THE CURB BEFORE 6:00 p.m. on the evening before pickup. Items should be placed at the curb NO LATER THAN 6:00 a.m. the day of pickup. Please use good judgement during inclement weather. If the garbage is buried or frozen into a snow bank, the hauler will not be able to pick it up. The same holds true for recyclable papers and cardboard if they get too wet. Also, if your garbage is not out by 6:00 a.m. and your street has been completed, please bring it back in for the next weeks pickup. The office has no way of getting hold of the haulers to send them back. If your items are out on time be sure to check these rules to see if they are properly bundled or bagged. If you determine that they are, call the office because the haulers try to leave a list of items they did not take. ASHES shall be put in containers that shall not exceed one bushel, maximum. GARBAGE AND RUBBISH shall be placed in non-leakable containers with covers and equipped with a handle strong enough to carry the container when filled, or heavy plastic bags tightly tied. GARBAGE PLACED IN CARDBOARD BOXES (OR MIXED WITH RECYCLABLES) WILL NOT BE PICKED UP. Garbage containers shall not exceed sixty (60) pounds in weight. Each resident is asked not to put out more than five (5) bags of trash per pickup. LARGE ITEMS APPLIANCES AND FURNITURE will be picked up on regular pickup day. These items should be placed at the curb for pickup. It is requested that you call the office (293-3720) at least one day in advance to notify them of these items. Items containing FREON should have the FREON removed if possible. Also check with the store from which you are buying replacement items to see if they will remove the old unit. Refrigerators and freezers must have the doors removed for safety reasons. CARPETING must be cut, bundled and tied in 4-ft lengths and should not exceed 60 lbs. In weight. CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL must be neatly piled and bundled properly. EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS WILL NOT BE PICKED UP and you should contact the Village Office for a Dumpster rental. TIRE DISPOSAL (RESIDENTIAL ONLY) Please try to dispose of used tires when you replace them. If you cannot dispose of old tires, we will pick them up on Wednesday mornings. TIRES MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE RIMS. Please notify the Village Office (293-3720) if you have tires for pickup. RECYCLING: Blue boxes are provided for recycling purposes. ALL recyclable items must be in the blue box. The exception is newspapers that may be placed in brown paper bags. Monroe County recycling rules are followed. A few of them are listed for your convenience: PAPER MATERIALS all types of paper. "If it tears...Recycle it" This includes newspapers, junk mail, magazines, envelopes - window and non-window, business papers and telephone directories. Please make sure the lightweight materials are secured so that they will not blow out of the boxes on days with high winds. CARDBOARD AND CLEAN EMPTY PIZZA BOXES flatten into pieces not larger than 2x4 and tie if necessary. This includes other types of cardboard such as cereal, shoe, pasta, and tissue boxes (discard plastic liners and flatten). ALL corrugated cardboard boxes MUST BE FLATTENED. DO NOT PLACE OTHER MATERIALS INSIDE OF BOXES FOR PICKUP. CARDBOARD THAT IS NOT PREPARED PROPERLY FOR RECYCLING WILL NOT BE PICKED UP. CONTAINERS Metal cans should be rinsed. Lids are acceptable. "Gable-top" cartons emptied and rinsed. Glass clear, green and brown glass food and beverage containers rinse and remove lids. Drink boxes empty, rinse and remove the straw. AEROSOL CANS empty and remove caps. No pesticides or spray paints. PLASTIC rinse and remove caps. Only plastic with a number 1 or 2 on the bottom will be recycled. BATTERIES, USED MOTOR OIL may be disposed of at any local garage. These items will not be picked up with the regular garbage. It is up to the homeowner to dispose of these items. SYRINGE DISPOSAL Improper disposal of syringes used for medical care can pose a hazard to refuse collection workers. Your used sharps will be accepted at the Countys Hazardous Waste Collection Facility during scheduled collection days. Proper packaging will be necessary. You should carefully place each of the used sharps in an empty clear two-liter bottle and store in a safe place. When full, the cap should be taped securely onto the bottle and a preprinted label (available from your pharmacist) must be placed on the full container or the following information may be written on the bottle with a marker DO NOT RECYCLE CONTAINS HOUSEHOULD SHARPS. HAZARDOUS WASTE Monroe County provides a facility to drop off these materials free of charge. For your information, PAINT IS CONSIDERED A HAZARDOUS WASTE. Other items that fall into this category include pesticides and fertilizers, household cleaners, wood preservatives and strippers, thinners and solvents, chemical drain cleaners, pool cleaners, anti-freeze, old gasoline, brake and transmission fluids and mercury. Please contact the County for location and times at 760-7600. GRASSCYCLING: The Village has begun a policy that strongly advocates Grasscycling. Grasscycling means leaving grass clippings on your lawn after each moving. It not only enriches your lawn with important nutrients, but it reduces the demand on expensive landfills.
How to grasscycle:
If you do not wish to use the bags, the village will maintain a compost pile (available 24 hours a day) in the rear of the cemetery (outside the village DPW fence). You are welcome to BRING YOUR COMPOST MATERIAL THERE. LEAF PICKUP : In the fall, leaf pickup will also be on Mondays. Leaves should be raked to the curb for pickup. The Village uses a leaf vacuum machine for this process so the leaves should not be in plastic bags. Open containers that can be dumped are okay to use. Please be careful not to mix leaves with branches, brush and twigs. These items will plug the vacuum machine. Leaf pickup will occur from approximately October 15th until November 25th. BRUSH PICKUP : Brush will be picked up year round on the FIRST AND THIRD MONDAYS OF EACH MONTH. Brush must be piled neatly at the curb with large ends all facing the same directions. Containers with a combination of yard waste and garbage will not be picked up. DUMPSTER RENTALS: The fee for the use of Village owned 3-yard dumpsters is $30 . This fee must be paid before delivery. Dumpsters will be available on a first come/first served basis. An application form must be filled out at the Village Office. The dumpsters are delivered on Thursdays and are picked up the following Tuesday. The dumpsters are to be used for the following materials ONLY – remodeling materials (no asbestos, stone, metal or concrete) and general household clean-up materials. |
